Analysis of the Interrelationship Between Melting and Fracturing of Alkali Halides

Popis: | On the basis of the lattice potential energy with two forms proposed by Born–Mie and Born–Mayer, respectively, the critical interionic separations $${{ r}}_{\mathrm{i}}$$ where the lattice is fractured due to tensile force have been evaluated for alkali metal halides. The theoretical results are analyzed together with the interionic separations $${{ r}}_{\mathrm{m}}$$ determined by the melting temperature and the help of the isobaric equation of state. A new and simple interrelationship between $${{ r}}_{\mathrm{m}}$$ and $${{ r}}_{\mathrm{i}}$$ is obtained, and the crystal melting behavior can be accordingly predicted for NaCl-structure ionic crystals. |
