Popis: In 1966, nephrology was recognized in Cuba as a medical specialty, and, within that context, the Institute of Nephrology was founded. At first, the development of nephrology focused on the treatment of acute kidney failure and exogenous intoxications. Later, it was consolidated with care for primary and secondary glomerular diseases, other kidney diseases, and, above all, chronic dialysis in its two variants (peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis), as well as kidney transplantation, which today allows us to provide integrated kidney care. We have nephrology coverage all across the country through 56 nephrology centers, located in the 15 provinces and a special municipality (located on a small island separated by sea from the big island), with more than 400 nephrologists and about 1500 specialized nurses. Our country has a unique, free health system that ensures universal access. The development of the specialty has been evidenced through scientific research and medical publications, as well as the exchange of experiences between Cuban nephrologists and those from other countries at national, regional, and world scientific events.
