Sc[sub 2]@C[sub 84]/Au(110): A synchrotron radiation study

Popis: The electronic properties of Sc2@C84 deposited on Au(110) were investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy, valence band and core-level photoemission spectroscopy. We compared the bulk spectra of Sc2@C84 to those of a monolayer produced by annealing the thick film to about 750 K. Strong evidence is found for chemisorption of the first layer of Sc2@C84: the C1s photoemission spectrum shows a shift in binding energy and an asymmetric broadening towards higher binding energies pointing to metallic screening and/or an increase in the number of non-equivalent carbon sites. The valence band spectra present a broadening and non-rigid shifts indicating hybridization of the molecular electronic states with those of the substrate. The X-ray absorption spectra recorded at the Sc 2p edge does not change with film thickness. We can therefore conclude that the scandium electronic structure is not influenced by the chemisorption of the endofullerene.
