The design and performance of a new, commercially available mass spectrometer are described. The instrument incorporates many special features that make it particularly suited for the study of reactions of positive or negative ions in the field-free regions. The magnetic and electric sector fields are arranged so that the ion beam traverses the magnetic sector first. This makes for convenience in that any particular ion species can be isolated and its reactions studied without interference from reactions of other ions. Special arrangements are made for the introduction of collision gas and for adjusting the lengths as well as the widths of the resolving and collimating slits. |
