Popis: Surfactants may interact with cell membranes of the cornea during use of ophthalmic products or as a result of accidental exposure. Inflammatory mediators including the eicosanoids, prostaglandins and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETE), are released from the corneain vivoas a response to chemical and mechanical injury.1-4The production of eicosanoids by cultured corneal cells has been used as anin vitromodel for the ocular response to acute injury caused by surfactants.5-7The present study compared thein vitroproduction of eicosanoids to two otherin vitromeasurements of cell membrane damage, vital dye staining8and intracellular calcium ion concentrations.9
