In the United States, community psychology is in its fourth decade of existence as a subdiscipline of psychology. It was created at a conference sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health concerned with training clinical psychologists to work in community mental health programs (Bennett, Anderson, Cooper, Hassel, Klein, & Rosenbaum, 1966). Since 1965, community psychology has found its way into a variety of countries. In some countries, community-oriented theory, research, and practice have been explicitly labeled as community psychology, reflecting an attempt to connect the concepts from the U.S. sources with local discussions and action programs. In other countries, social needs and developments have given rise to a community perspective without specific reference to, or influence from, community psychology in the U.S |
