The San Carlos Irrigation and Drainage District (SCIDD) is undertaking a 10-year rehabilitation project of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)-eligible Florence-Casa Grande (FCG) Canal (also known as the Main Canal/AZ AA:3:215[ASM]) in Pinal County, Arizona. The canal, which is currently operated and maintained by SCIDD, was constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) between 1923 and 1928 and incorporated into the San Carlos Irrigation Project (SCIP)—a comprehensive irrigation project designed to provide water to both private individuals and the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). To improve the overall safety and efficiency of the FCG Canal, the anticipated work involves decommissioning the existing China Wash Flume—a contributing structure of the SCIP irrigation system. Reclamation contracted with North Wind Resource Consulting (North Wind) to conduct archival research and prepare HAER documentation and interpretive materials for the China Wash Flume to serve as mitigation for future improvement activities that could have an “adverse effect” on the NRHP-eligible property. The current document serves to provide the results of the archival research and field documentation. |
