Five organophosphorus compounds, five synthetic pyrethroids and three insect growth regulators were assessed in the laboratory as potential protectants against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) in peanuts stored at 30°C, 70% r.h. Activity against adults and progeny was assessed separately. Of the insecticides tested, chlorpyrifos-methyl, methacrifos and deltamethrin applied at 5 mg kg−1 completely prevented the development of progeny. Deltamethrin also had high potency against adults. Malathion had low potency against both adults and progeny owing to resistance in the test insects. Pirimiphos-methyl prevented the development of progeny at 25–50 mg kg−1 but had low potency against adults. |
