The combustion mechanisms of double base propellants in the presence of plateau or mesa producing additives are investigated. The propellant regression is the result of an interaction between condensed and gas phases processes. The condensed phase degradation, could be a prime site for the action of the additive. It seems however that the condensed phase degradation of the propellant, quite probably initiated by breaking of RO−NO 2 bonds and followed by oxidation reactions, is not affected by lead or copper salts. These compounds are very likely to go through the thermal wave unaffected, emerge from the surface and decompose into PbO or CuO once trapped in the carbon residues. Significant amounts of NO 2 and aldehydes emerging from the condensed phase are observed by utilizing a linear pyrolysis device operating under vacuum. Interaction of aldehydes with PbO or CuO can enhance the carbon residues and a reinforcement of the primary flame is observed (as evidenced by higher final temperatures). |
