Popis: Water and wind movements, computed from daily observations at two light vessels in the English Channel and the North Sea, are shown graphically and discussed. In the case of the “Royal Sovereign” light vessel (English Channel), the angle between the directions of the residual wind and of the wind-produced water movement (Ekman angle) is found to be 35°, which is in accordance with theory, but which may be subject to error due to the low residual wind strength during the period under review. For the “Cromer Knoll” light vessel (North Sea), the residual wind is resolved along the main direction of the water movement, and the result plotted against the residual water movement. It is found that the mean of the intrinsic water movement (water movement with wind effect removed) has a seasonal periodicity. An extension of Thorade's equation connecting wind and water travel is tentatively deduced for higher wind strengths. Water movements at the two lightships are compared.
