Summary Lobelia chinensis Lour. hairy roots were induced with Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATCC 15834. The hairy roots grew well and produced three polyacetylenes, lobetyol (1), lobetyolin (2) and lobetyolinin (3), in hormone-free Murashige-Skoog, Gamborg BS, Woody Plant (WP) and Root Culture media. Particularly in WP medium in the dark, the hairy roots produced maximum amounts of the polyacetylenes (1, 3.4 mg/flask; 2, 10.6 mg/flask; 3, 2.8 mg/flask). When cultured in the light, the hairy roots became green, indicating chlorophyll accumulation. The growth and polyacetylene production of the hairy roots were unrelated to the chlorophyll contents. |
