Popis: Under wave‐like aeration, three crude oils of low, medium and high viscosity are spread in 0.5 mm films on artificial seawater and irradiated by artificial sunlight. In intervals up to 28 days, the amount of water soluble compounds and the toxicity of the aqueous layer are determined, using small crabs (artemia salina). A variety of compounds are identified by GC/ MS and FT‐IR spectroscopy.—The intrinsic photosensitizing properties of the aforementioned oils is determined and compared with that of additive photosensitizers. The synthesis of a sensitizer especially adapted to hydrocarbons is described.
