Odd-parity excitations for the A = 6 and 14 nuclei are calculated within the framework of the particle-hole shell model with a consistent treatment of core-excited configurations as well as excitations which effect only extra-core particles. For A = 6, this basis is composed of two-particle and three-particle/one-hole configurations. The basis for the A = 14 problem is composed of two-hole and three-hole/one-particle configurations. Spherical harmonic oscillator radial functions are used, and the spurious content of the basis is removed. A finite-range gaussian residual interaction with Wigner, Majorana, Heisenberg and Bartlett exchange components is diagonalized in the non-spurious subspace. The resulting eigensolutions are used to obtain absolute dipole strength distributions for these nuclei. These distributions and the calculated level spectra are compared with the experimental data. |
