Popis: 1. 1. Biotelemetry transmitters were implanted in the abdominal cavity of four mature swamp rabbits. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were measured before, during, and after a frightening stimulus. 2. 2. Each rabbit showed a significant reduction in heart rate during stimulus. Mean heart rate values during prestimulus. stimulus, and poststimulus were 176 ± 21, 128 ± 16 and 167 ± 20 beats/min (X ± SE) respectively. 3. 3. Three of four rabbits showed a significant reduction in oxygen consumption during stimulus. Mean oxygen consumption values during prestimulus. stimulus, and poststimulus were 7.65 ± 0.59. 6.60 ± 0.61 and 8.10 ± 0.68 ml O 2 (min kg) respectively. 4. 4. These data suggest frightened swamp rabbits reduce both heart rate and oxygen consumption while frightened. Oxygen consumption tends to overshoot during recovery suggesting an oxygen debt is incurred during fright.
