Popis: | Knowledge of the nature, significance, and prevalence of esophageal mucosal plaques is limited. Five patients with glycogenic acanthosis are described. The typical endoscopic, morphological, and histological appearances are illustrated. This lesion is characterized by focal hyperplasia of epithelial cells containing abundant cytoplasmic glycogen. The etiology of glycogenic acanthosis is obscure. There is not a clear relationship to smoking, alcohol, hot liquids, or acid reflux. Most esophageal plaques probably represent glycogenic acanthosis. Our observations suggest that it is unrelated to leukoplakia. It is especially important to recognize the nature of the lesion, since it does not appear to have the malignant potential of leukoplakia. |
