LONG PULSE OPERATION OF THE ASDEX ION SOURCES WITH EDGE COOLED EXTRACTION GRIDS

Popis: The ion sources developed for the ASDEX neutral injectors have proved to be very reliable at their planned performances /1/: 40 KV - 24A- 0.2 s. The ASDEX programme asks now for higher energies (55 kV) and pulse duration as long as possible (1s or more). Experiments have been initiated to determine the maximum performances which can be attained using the technique of edge cooled molybdenum-copper grids developed for the initial ASDEX programme. Beam optics, thermal and mechanical computations are presented which show that the grid system must work at high current density and aspect ratio (aperture diameter/first gap spacing). One set of grids based on these computations has been constructed; experimental results obtained with this set will be presented.
