Ultraviolet radiation (UV) from sunlight is the major etiologic factor in the genesis of skin cancer. For squamous and basal cell carcinoma, the correlation of rates of incidence with latitude and, presumbably, solar exposure (Scotto, 1986), occurence on sun-exposed body regions (Scotto, 1986) and higher incidence in individuals who spend more time outdoors (Urbach et al., 1972) point to the sun as a major etiologic agent. For melanoma, there is a good correlation of rates of mortality with latitude (Mason and Mckay, 1974). However, the relationship between solar UV radiation exposure and cutaneous melanoma is not simple (Sober, 1987). |
