Popis: A 4 week old ostrich chick (Struthio camelus) was brought to the Central University Laboratory, a constituent of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University for necropsy examination. The ostrich chick was raised in semi-intensive system and picked up sand and pebbles from the field where the bird was allowed to raise. The affected bird showed gradual anorexia, lethargy, dehydration, weight loss, weakness, sternal recumbency and finally died. Necropsy revealed impaction of gizzard and proventriculus with sand and pebbles. The gizzard was enlarged and had adhesion with the abdominal wall with a focal area of haemorrhage. Peritoneal cavity and pericardium contained serosanguineous fluid. Mucosa of the gizzard revealed ulcers of about 4 to 10 mm diameter size. Microscopically, liver had multifocal areas of sinusoidal congestion. Gizzard mucosa revealed patchy area of haemorrhage and focal ulcers associated with gram positive rods. E. coli was isolated from the microbiological culture of peritoneal fluid.
