SOME OF THE conclusions reached by John Frew in his recent article, "Bulfinch on Gothic,"' must be revised in light of the following facts. The sketch of the church at Acre published by Charles A. Place,2 which Frew described as "lost," is in fact preserved in a copy of the Essays on Gothic Architecture at the Massachusetts Historical Society (Fig. 1).3 Frew relies heavily on Place's assertion that "two pages of [Bulfinch's] notes on Saxon architecture, the influence of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Saracens in Spain, etc.," were also to be found in the book; but no such lengthy exegesis appears in this copy of the Essays.4 Either Place misplaced these notes to this book from another source, where they do indeed remain lost, or, more likely, his description is inaccurate. The only note in this copy is what is written beneath the sketch |
