Infection, ulceration and/or destruction of deep tissues associated with neurological and varying degrees of peripheral vascular disease in the lower extremities occurring in patients with diabetes causes an enormous impact on social and economic level by the high morbidity and mortality associated. The loss of sensitivity, foot deformities and limitation of joint mobility with peripheral vascular disease and minimal trauma are, in different proportions, the defining elements in the evolution of the process. The five milestones in preventing diabetic foot are: regular foot examination in patients with diabetes, foot risk identification, patient, family and health professionals education, the use of appropriate footwear and the regular evaluation and/or podiatry treatment. The etiology of diabetic foot infections are mostly polymicrobial. The treatment is based on intensive antibiotic therapy, surgical debridement and local treatment, glycemic control and foot discharge. |
