Popis: | Based on satellite salinity observations, this study presents the evidence of haline wake induced by the tropical cyclone Vardah in the Bay of Bengal. Salinity observations from Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) are employed to examine the influence of cyclone passage on the sea surface salinity. Significant increase in the sea surface salinity spanning over a large area, predominantly on the right-hand side of the cyclone track is revealed from satellite observations. The amplitude of sea surface salinity increase is observed upto 1.5 psu. Subsurface salinity observations from Argo floats reveals breaking of the barrier layer due to the strong vertical mixing imparted by the cyclone. This resulted in the mixing of the upper ocean with the saltier waters below, as a consequence of which the salt wake is formed. Rain rate observations suggested that higher rain rate accounted for the freshening which occurred on the left-hand side of the cyclone track. This study provides details on the response ... |
