The author states that 50% of physicians change practice situations during the first two years after completing training. He believes that we choose medicine as an occupation and select our specialty with due care and respect, yet give little importance to "choosing a practice," as judged by the minimal time and attention we devote to making this critical decision. These job changes are costly, not only financially but in lost opportunities and emotional trauma, to the neophyte physician and family. Choosing a practice is a career decision as important as any other decision the physician will ever make. According to the author, young physicians just completing their training have had a "sustained adolescence" with educators in charge of their lives.
