Burnout is a potential psychological consequence for all clinicians working in critical care, and one which may be exacerbated by working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Burnout has typically been examined in the critical care medical and nursing professions, but is relatively under-investigated in physiotherapists. We are currently conducting a longitudinal observational study to assess presence and severity of burnout in physiotherapists working in critical care during the pandemic. (BRAVE; BuRn-out Across physiotherapists working in critical care during the COVID-19 pandEmic). Data from this study will inform the scale of the problem of burnout in critical care healthcare professionals, specifically physiotherapists, and guide the need to explore the effectiveness of potential treatment strategies. The purpose of this scoping review is to review the current literature to explore potential treatment interventions or management strategies to manage burnout in healthcare professionals working in critical care. A secondary aim will be to examine evidence specifically conducted within the physiotherapy profession. This information will help inform the development of a future trial of interventions to reduce the presence and severity of burnout in critical care physiotherapists. |
