The MembersandIvhu versus the State. Two plays debating the nation in Zimbabwean community theatre

Popis: This article discusses representations of the nation in two Zimbabwean satires in the community theatre genre, i.e. cultural expression as a form of mass media and as such the plays participate in hegemonic battles. The immediate context is the political situation in Zimbabwe in 1999, when the opposition was gaining a foothold and there was a certain silent optimism about the future development of democracy and the strengthening of human rights. The plays are critical of the regime. The Members (Amakhosi Theatre Company, Bulawayo) criticises corrupt MPs and Ivhu versus the State (Rooftop Theatre Company, Harare) deals with the Zimbabwean intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The plays are analysed in terms of how they narrate actual conflicts in Zimbabwe. The analytical concepts derive from cultural studies and postcolonial theory, which emphasise that the public sphere consists of conflicting discourses and that political struggle is also a politics of representation.
