Popis: Whether young or old, individuals with disabilities are at increased risk for abuse and neglect when compared to the rates for individuals without disabilities. Reducing that risk is the responsibility of us all: families, servicing agencies, forensic personnel, legislators, the individuals with disabilities themselves, and others. However, policymakers carry a larger part of the responsibility to protect people with disabilities from harm because they enact the laws for all other stakeholders to follow. Those of us who influence policymakers must provide them with the information needed so legislation can be enacted that provides adequate protection for all individuals. This article provides information to advocates for individuals with disabilities regarding (a) recognition of the problem, (b) public policy's role in the protection of individuals with disabilities, and (c) how to influence policymakers to protect the most vulnerable.
