Popis: The River Mole flood alleviation scheme provides an example of the way in which the detailed design of hydraulic works may be modified in the light of changing priorities. Most often these result from changes in the economic climate but technological innovation also has a part to play. In particular, the prevailing interest rate and controls on capital expenditure, influence strongly the trade-off between permanent works and future maintenance requirements. Technological change has led to the simplification of maintenance procedures and the sophistication of operational and monitoring techniques such that designs can safely be made less conservative.
