Popis: | Proto‐Algonquian Ca‐reduplication (“light” reduplication) was used for time‐stable states or event‐internal repetitions, with ablaut of stem‐vowel Proto‐Algonquian *e to Proto‐Algonquian *a: in some words (as in Proto‐Algonquian *ka‐ka:nw- ‘severally long’ from Proto‐Algonquian *kenw- ‘long’) and to Proto‐Algonquian *ye: in others. In Proto‐Central‐Alqonquian, it was also used for emotional intensity. Proto‐Algonquian Ca:- reduplication (“heavy” reduplication) was used for sets (such as multiple referents). In Proto‐Central‐Algonquian it was also used for intermittent actions. Proto‐Central‐Algonquian C1VC2- reduplication was used for sudden violent action (Proto‐Central‐Algonquian *V mirrors the stem vowel, and C2 is a voiceless obstruent). Light reduplication is a likely source for Algic infixing, and nothing precludes a pre‐Proto‐Algic origin. |
