Stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue are reviewed with respect to technological problems which face the construction and operation of large engineering systems. There is a great incentive to pay progressively more attention to the factors which control SCC/CF as the international engineering community embarks upon new projects aimed at producing energy or new materials. New SCC/CF phenomena will continuously appear. However, the phenomenon is becoming increasingly susceptible to correlation through now partially established continuous dependencies upon principal engineering variables. The outlines of such continua are now apparent and major emphasis should be given to clarifying the nature of such correlations. A major cause of failure continues to relate to adventitious circumstances, and more attention needs to be given to identifying such circumstances and appropriately changing new designs. In the near future, additional scientific and technological work needs to be undertaken to develop rigorous design equations which can be used with confidence by the design community. Further, more particular attention needs to be paid to preventing SCC/CF during all stages of equipment manufacture and operation, from the early stages of manufacturing to the final stages of steady state operation and shutdown. |
