Popis: The object of dredging is usually to remove material from a particular location and to place it at another. Alternatively, the object may simply be to remove material from a particular place and to allow it to be moved by natural forces to a new location. The latter condition may be achieved by 'agitation dredging'. This is the simplest of all dredging processes and is most applicable to maintenance dredging in fine-grained sediments. Agitation dredging involves disturbing the seabed materials by forcing them into suspension, after which they may be moved by natural water flow to be redeposited elsewhere. There is a wide diversity of dredging plant and methods. Some have evolved to meet a particular requirement, whilst others are more versatile. Some types of dredger may be quite unable to perform particular dredging tasks, or at best may only be able to perform that task at much reduced efficiency. By the careful design and specification of dredging work it may be possible to reduce the variety of plant required, or to allow plant to operate at greater efficiency. It is important that the methods of dredging are properly understood and considered during the design and planning stages of the proposed works.
