Gutierrez examines how globalization affects representations of childhood in recent children’s films. Focusing on the dialogue between global and local influences on children’s culture, this chapter looks at how complex cross-cultural negotiations allow for innovative storytelling and production in a range of family films, including examples from Disney and Studio Ghibli and three films from the Philippines. Gutierrez anchors her study of cross-cultural exchange on the way global narrative and cinematic conventions are given local color, becoming a hybrid that is called “glocal.” As well as enriching local representations of identity and nationality, this type of blending reveals how local variations contribute to global themes of childhood. “Global stories, local imagination, glocal innovations” shows the power that can be gained from glocal exchange and hybridity. |
