The training process can, generally speaking, only be effective if the planning, control, and guidance measures oriented toward the action goal (here: maximizing velocity) take all technique and ability characteristics required by the demand profile adequately into consideration. Depending on the individual level of performance, coaches and athletes therefore need to direct their attention — under the aspect of acquisition and adaptation — toward those characteristics of technique and ability which have proven their relevance to performance. Arguments for this focus are based on our current understanding of technique. To provide such arguments the images of swimming movements (preliminary descriptive information) are divided, examined, and explained on a conceptional level. The analysis of the entire movement in its complexity is related to application, as its goal is the derivation of plausible target characteristics which can be utilized after a comparison of target and present state (diagnosis) during the technical and endurance preparation phase (Fig. 1). |
