Autistic people have been shown to have an increased perceptual capacity that processes more information at any given time compared to non-autistic people. The aim of the study is to compare performance of perceptual capacity (the amount of information that can be processed at any given time) to participants who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Currently, the majority of autism research is carried out with typical individuals as the comparison group, yet this cannot assess the uniqueness of a particular trait (and consequently its predictive power with respect to autistic symptomatology). Here we move beyond research framings of normalcy and take a cross-syndrome approach to understand whether superior capacity is a specific component that underpins autism. This line of research is vital for the advancement of theories of autism, and to enable the development of syndrome-specific support and interventions grounded in each condition’s unique profile. To address this aim, the proposed study will aim to replicate previously employed paradigms that detailed a perceptual advantage in autism assessing a dual visual search and inattentional blindness paradigm. |
