Popis: | Over the past quarter of a century, we have witnessed a dramatic shift in perspective from media in the service of education to education in the service of media. To understand the relation between new media and communication education, this paper argues, we must begin by realizing that the connection between the history of communication technology and the history of communication education is not, and never was, a necessary one. For while the former was centred around electrical engineering, the latter was more concerned with social engineering. The author concludes that there is a possible, but by no means obvious, point of convergence between these two histories; and that this knowledge is desirable if we wish to use the educational context, not just to fulfil technological imperatives or industrial prerogatives, but as a place to explore new possibilities and realize grander visions of the future. |
