Popis:	Diabetes is a complex syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia that is associated with an increased risk of microvascular and macrovascular complications. Preventing these complications including stroke entails a multifaceted approach that should involve combined treatment of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Treatment should involve a multidisciplinary approach including both medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and pharmacologic therapy. MNT should focus on both carbohydrates and a general healthy eating pattern to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Algorithms are available to provide guidance to clinicians for use of oral or injectable medications in the treatment of glycemia.
