Popis: “What are you?” . . . “You can't be English!” . . . “There goes that White woman!” . . . “You actually talk about this project as if you were a person of color!” These are some of the many examples discussed in this book that illustrate how identities are questioned and constructed on a daily basis. The evidence in this book has found that these simple yet affecting experiences influence individuals’ identity construction and, in turn, vote choice. The final chapter (Conclusion) draws out core takeaways. It also explores what the findings and conclusions from this study mean for South African politics moving forward, which includes a brief consideration of the 2019 national elections. It then discusses a number of questions that the results of this study leave unanswered and thus puts forward the most important next steps in the ethnic distance research agenda.
