The limit of superheat has been determined at atmospheric pressure for a wide variety of pure liquid hydrocarbons and for three binary mixtures of hydrocarbons. The pure liquids include normal, branched, and cyclic alkanes, as well as several alkenes and alkynes. The three mixtures each have n-pentane as their more volatile component and cyclohexane, n-dodecane, and n-hexadecane as the less volatile components. The pure liquids vaporize at an absolute temperature which is about 90% of the critical temperature. The vaporizations all occur over a narrow temperature range with a sharp report. The liquid mixtures vaporize over a wider temperature range with a softer report. The temperature range increases and the violence of the vaporization decreases as the volatility difference between the two components increases. These effects are consistent with homogeneous nucleation theory and diffusion controlled bubble growth for the mixtures. |
