Popis: In Chapter 2, Humphries explores the shifts in gender space and power emerging in a rapidly industrialized and industrializing world. He explores with close textual discussion the ways in which representations of transport and uses of transportation in Sons and Lovers reveal how mechanized industrial society reinforces patriarchy by extending technological access and enhancing male mobility at the expense of female space at a time of shifting gender expectations about mobility and empowerment. Humphries refers particularly to train travel and symbolism in this chapter, but also discusses episodes where tramcars and bicycles as well as other forms of motion and mobility play significant parts in the development of the key relationships.
