Track analyses of medium energy α particle trajectories recorded in nuclear emulsions led to the observation of strong ionizing events (S.I.E.). The number of the energetic S.I.E.'s increases with the primary's energy; their production is more than one order of magnitude higher than the rutherfordian recoils, and increases nearly proportionally with the concentration of the CNOH compound of the detector. The mean contribution of S.I.E.'s with a radial spread ⪖ 0.458 μm to the total energy loss of 13.6 MeV α particles is ≈ 30 times higher than if Rutherford interactions only are considered. A partial tentative interpretation in terms of total potential scattering, where the nuclear forces are taken into account, results in a significant higher contribution to the stopping power of the incident particle than by Rutherford scattering only, especially for increasing ejection energies T o . |
