An important aspect of managing patients in neurocritical care units involves sound understanding of commonly encountered infections. Infections increase the overall morbidity, mortality, and cost of healthcare. In this chapter, we discuss the diagnosis and management of ventilator-associated pneumonia, ventriculitis, meningoencephalitis, urinary tract infections, bacteremia, surgical site infections, and colitis. More importantly, we discuss ways to prevent such infections. For cases where prevention is no longer an option, we also provide suggestions for empiric antimicrobial therapy. |
