Schepisi’s output somewhat slowed in the first decade of the new century before returning to Australia at its end. The major achievement of the period is his brilliant television version of Richard Russo’s novel, Empire Falls (2005). The film was never intended as a TV series, but was screened in two parts, each with four ‘chapters’. This haunting study of a community in decline and the network of relationships involved shows Schepisi’s talent for such interweaving and the stylistic aptness of his approach. It was preceded by one of his lesser films, It Runs in the Family (2003), in which the on-screen family is incarnated in the real-life Douglas family. The effect is amiable enough but lacks narrative drive. |
