Popis: The popularity of compact EV (Electric Vehicle)s such as electric kickboards, segways, hoverboards, and electric bicycles has been rapidly increasing. Compact EVs can be easily charged by the domestic electric supply and transported in automobiles and on public transport vehicles. Furthermore, because of their simple operation for distances of up to tens of kilometers-, they are considered a new means of transportation. However, lithium-ion batteries which may explode owing to over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, and over-charging conditions, are used for compact EVs. In this study, a thermal management (TM) circuit for brushless permanent motor-battery systems that can be used for compact EVs was constructed. The circuit was developed for 1 kW compact EVs and 720 Wh lithium-ion battery systems. At an over-temperature of 70 °C or higher, the brushless permanent motor (BPM) is turned off, and the lithium-ion battery is discharged. The effectiveness of the TM circuit was verified with a metal–insulator-transition (MIT) sensor.
