Popis: Reactive power compensation is needed in order to execute the high performance pulses foreseen by the development programme of JET. Vacuum switches are used to energise the capacitor banks which provide this compensation. Switching on is performed at precisely the zero of the AC voltage waveform, with the capacitors discharged, so that transients produced on the 36 kV busbar voltage are negligible. This paper covers the main design aspects, the results of various tests, experience gained during the early period of operation, and minor modifications.
