Popis: | Fatigue tests with constant Δk and R were performed on specimens of 2024-T351 Al alloy. Fatigue crack growth starts in the tensile mode, but shear lips soon develop if Δk is high enough. Three properties of these shear lips are described: the transverse crack front length, the angle of rotation between the shear lip and the tensile part of the crack, and the shear lip width. These properties will be correlated with the effective Δk , using Schijve's crack closure formula, and with the measured crack growth rates. It is shown that extra closure due to shear lips lags behind the shear lip development. It builds up a few millimetres behind the crack tip. |
