Bioremediation of air using microorganisms immobilized in bedding nanomaterials

Popis: Biological technologies for air pollution control are becoming reference technologies at industrial scale since they can be efficiently operated at ambient temperature and pressure conditions, which makes them in many cases more cost-efficient and simpler to operate than their physical-chemical counterparts. However, there are still challenges that limit the use of biotechnologies for the removal of indoor pollutants or the abatement of hydrophobic compounds. Hence, a new generation of biological technologies based on the immobilization of microbial cells in bedding nanomaterials have emerged to overcome the drawbacks previously reported in conventional bioreactors. In this chapter, the immobilization of microorganisms in bioactive coatings and silicone oil for air bioremediation is presented. The technologies developed from bioactive coatings and silicone oil as well as their performance on target pollutants are critically reviewed.
