With respect to morphological and biochemical parameters the type of cell death can be related to necrosis or apoptosisl,2. The first one begins from the increase of the outer membrane permeability, cell swelling and is usually a result of severe cell damage by external physical or chemical agents. on the contrary, the major manifestations of apoptosis are regular internucleosomal fragmentation of nuclear DNA, cell shrinkage and much later increase of the membrane permeability. By many criteria apoptosis seems to be an active response of cells to physiological or damaging signal. Apoptosis plays an important role in embryogenesis, regulation of the cell number in repopulating tissues and initiation of carcinogenesis1–3. |
