The present experiment investigated young children’s use of fundamental frequency, intensity and duration to indicate word stress. Eighteen children (six each at two years, three years and four years) produced multiple tokens of eight novel two-syllable words balanced for stress placement and segmental content. Results of acoustic analyses showed that both fundamental frequency and intensity were used by the three- and four-year-olds to mark stress in both first and second syllable positions. Two-year-olds often differentiated the two syllables in a word with fundamental frequency and/ or intensity, but not always in the direction of the target stress pattern. All age groups demonstrated the ability to use vowel duration to differentiate stressed from unstressed syllables, although there was continued improvement with age in the ability to reduce duration for unstressed syllables. Perceptual (listener judgement) data also revealed significantly greater accuracy in stress placement for the three- and four-year-olds than for the two-year-olds. |
