The health care of pregnant women and their newborn infants in poor communities is usually provided by midwives. Continuing education of these midwives, especially in rural areas, is often inadequate due to a lack of resources. To meet this challenge, a cheap, self-directed programme in perinatal care was developed in Southern Africa. This innovative distance learning course has been widely used by nurses, doctors and medical students. Two prospective controlled trials have demonstrated that it is an effective means of teaching knowledge and clinical skills, altering attitudes, and improving the standard of maternal and infant care. |
