This article describes the rationale for the California Department of Health Services' allocation of significant funding to community programs to promote physical activity among ethnically diverse adults. We review the recommendations and health behavior data that led to funding this new area of health promotion, summarize the scientific basis for promoting physical activity as a means of chronic disease prevention, explain the model for intervention and its relationship to the Request for Applications, and summarize key points from each of the articles in this collection, which were written by local project staff. |
