The Orton-Travis concept of poor cerebral lateralization for speech dominance in stutterers is seen as a pervasive influence on stuttering theory for half a century. Possible reasons for this, and the recent resurgence of this theory as a powerful force in current stuttering research, are discussed.Tests performed on stutterers included intracarotid sodium amytal tests and dichotic word tests. The results of these, and of recent similar work in the U.S.A. would seem to afford a definitive answer to the Orton-Travis question. |
