Popis: | This article explores what the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals’ touring community has done to engage in restorative justice practices and create an atmosphere of accountability on the fringe festival circuit. It addresses what fringe artists have done between 2016 and now to address sexual assault at Canadian fringe festivals. As independent artists, fringe artists do not have the option of going to human resources or management when reporting a sexual assault. As such, they have turned to alternative methods of restorative justice. Alongside these efforts, author Thea Fitz-James considers the limits of restorative justice and her own struggle to identify exactly what constitutes a fringe community. Fitz-James tells her own personal account, attempting to offer not a pitch for restorative justice but, rather, an invitation into the mess of accountability and community healing. What follows are some attempts at bringing storytelling and restorative justice together to address sexual assault within artistic communities. This article is expanded from a story shared in May 2018 at the Canadian Association for Theatre Research session “Beyond #MeToo: A Roundtable and Discussion Session on Misconduct in Theatre Studies, Practice, and Training.” |
